When the Canaries Stop Singing

It is no longer a tenable position to believe that it is only the individual that must change when they have depression.

The American post-modernist myth is that the individual can COMPLETELY control and change their life to how they want it. Sadly this denies reality. We of course DO have a fair bit of control and things that we can change about ourselves, however there is a limit.

I have 'worked' on myself over the years:

  • yoga
  • tai chi
  • assertiveness training
  • cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • person-centred therapy
  • accupuncture
  • chinese medicine
  • mindfulness
  • meditation
  • exercising three times a week
  • gardening
  • walking in nature
  • decluttering
  • getting rid of toxic friends
  • buddhism
  • studying psychology and reading hundreds of research papers
  • going to ashrams
  • iridology
  • healthy diets
  • learning about boundaries
  • becoming a better communicator
  • learning to be less defensive etc etc etc
The list goes on and on and on. I have really looked at myself for over 20 years to try and improve myself. It has helped me a reasonable amount, however my mental health issues remain.

I have realised that it is not enough to change oneself. Society also needs changing. In short modern society makes sensitive decent people sick. Those people on the psychopathic spectrum who don't care about others find it easy to walk on others and to remain happy. Our society rewards psychopaths by giving them lots of money and material possessions.

All the depressed people I have ever met have one thing in common - they are really nice people. The problem is that modern society, bit by bit, breaks down and destroys nice people. These people need to be medicated to numb their feelings regarding the sick world we live in.

Whenever there is any recurring problem, usually the best solution is to look for the REAL root of the problem. The metaphor of a root is useful. Any gardener knows that if we cut a weed near to the ground, it looks like the problem has gone away, but sadly without 'getting to the root' the 'solution' has done nothing but to delay the inevitability of the problem returning.

This is why I DEMAND that we all see society for what it is. There are some amazing things in modern society (eradication of smallpox, antibiotics, computers, heart transplants) however we do need to look at the sores in this arrogant untamed beast.

The problem is that most people in power live on the psychopathic spectrum. They don't care about killing or destroying others. This needs to change.

My message is that the nice people need to stop being so bloody nice and they need to stand up against repression of any kind, this might be:
  • bullying at work
  • bad managers
  • abusive husbands or wives
  • etc etc
It really is time for change! :)
